ARNOLD 209-4       (18 POINTS)

THORESBY  202-9  (7 POINTS)

This was another game played in red hot conditions and marred by poor umpiring decisions. Although it has now come to the point where you just have to acccept that the standard is poor and you will get a lot of bad decisions.

Chesh won the toss and as Arnolds pitch has not produced many big scores we decided to put the opposition in. This looked a good decision as during the early part of the game the pitch was very erratic with Winslade and Patel bowling very well; Patel getting the first two wickets whilst Ben was the unlucky one this week. Just when a change was about to be made Patel got the third wicket and a fourth quickly followed as Dnash, who had replaced Ben, managed to get a fingertip to a straight drive which found the Arnold batsman well out of his ground.

This was the changing point of the game as we strived for the fifth wicket. Dan did get Foss out caught behind only for the umpire to call no ball and offer an unbelievable explanation.

Foss and Flood then started to take control playing shots all around the ground, Flood just giving one chance which Hughes could not hold on to. They went on to post an unbeaten stand of 131.

Thoresby started off well with Chesh and Dnash posting an opening stand of 56 before Dnash was well caught at slip. This brought Hughes to the wicket who, in front of his watching parents, played a number of glorious shots, first putting on 75 with Chesh (before he was triggered) then 35 with Nige before he played a poor shot and was caught. Unfortunately, with a ton in sight, Paul was caught on the boundary.

Simon was run out giving the umpires their hat trick and the lower order were left with a difficult task as the run rate went up. The day was maybe summed up when Patel’s well-hit drive in the last over ran all the way up the hillside and stopped just a couple of inches short of the line.

Overall this was a decent performance against one of the top teams. We just need to learn to get over the line in close matches.
