THORESBY COLLIERY
(6) 193 for 9 (Ben Winslade 49 n.o.,
Nigel Burkitt 34)
lost to
CUCKNEY (19) 195 for
8 (Aron Thomas 82, Maz Nazar 35, Andrew Jackman 35 n.o., David Evans 3 for 62)
by two wickets
Another very close game that was lost. We arrived at Cuckney to find two pitches marked out (neither of which we
played on) and only a handful of their players, but all was not lost as the taxi
arrived from
Chesh won the toss after we had
all been expecting another tanning session!!. We all
retreated to the shade to watch Dan and Chesh open
the innings, Chesh played some great shots before
getting a short one that he top edged to mid on. Paul did not quite look his
normal self and after a number of false shots got out in very similar fashion
to Chesh. Nige then joined
Dan and finally found a bit of form before Dan was bowled with the best ball of
the day. Simon fell in the slips and Nige got bowled
trying to force the change bowling. Ian Smallwood was very unlucky to be out
hitting the ball onto his boot then into the close fielder’s hands. This left
us struggling on 140-8 before Dancing Dave joined Grizzly Ben to post a stand
of 48, with Dave’s contribution being 5. Dave got out to the next to last ball,
leaving Ben unbeaten on 49.
In reply Jeppo struck in his first
over to give us a great start. A superb piece of fielding by Simon accounted
for the next wicket. Ben then got into the act with an LBW at the second time
of asking. Dancing Dave was then introduced into the attack and, after the
previous evening’s experiment with coke (as in cola),
he bowled with great control and soon had a couple of wickets. At the other end
Dnash was struggling to find his usual accuracy but
nearly had the prize wicket of the opener Thomas who was holding the innings
together, Nige just failing to hold on to an under edge.
Ben was brought back into the attack and finally got the vital wicket of Thomas
clean bowled. This brought to the wicket ex-West Indian ‘A’ player Andy Jackman and, after surviving a good LBW shout first ball,
went on to show his class with just a couple of half chances given. Dave returned
and took another wicket but it was to no avail as Cuckney
won with a few balls to spare.
This was a very good game played in a good spirit, but it is
becoming very frustrating that we keep losing close games.
