SATURDAY 26th APRIL
KILLAMARSH 107 ao [1 point]
THORESBY COLL 108-3 [20 points]
A multinational Thoresby turned up at Killamarsh’s much improved ground
for the opening game of the season to find a pitch that was wet at one end and dry
at the other. Killamarsh’s captain Bull won the toss and surprisingly decided
to bat; maybe the crushing defeat they suffered at Thoresby at the end of last
season influenced the decision.
Thoresby’s aggressive new ball partnership of Patel and Winslade soon
had the home side in trouble and the first wicket fell in the third over, a
good low catch by Hughes off the bowling of Winslade. Patel then got in on the
act having Bull well caught by Nash at slip. Winslade then struck twice to
leave the home side struggling on 31-4. Patel then got the fifth wicket and but
for a dropped caught and bowled off Killamarsh’s top scorer Allen it is hard to
see how Killamarsh would have got past sixty. But the chance went begging and a
45 run partnership took the home side to a good position of 95-5 before the
introduction of Jamie (Karaoke) Jepson, who immediately staked a case for a
regular first team place with two quick wickets before ‘George Roper’ Evans
took the eighth. Winslade was then brought back into the attack and removed the
last two batsmen to leave Killamarsh 107 all out.
Thoresby set off in a positive manner with Cheshire soon crashing the
ball to the boundary, so good to see him playing freely after last season’s
disappointing run. Birkett was first to depart, well caught on the boundary
with the score on 31. Nash then joined Cheshire and the score had reached 52
before Cheshire was bowled around his legs. Hughes and Nash then took the score
to 74 before Hughes was bowled. Chatterton came to the wicket and, like
Cheshire, looked a different player to last season, playing shots all round the
wicket. He and Nash quickly reached the target, Chatterton finishing on 20 and
Nash 29.
This was an excellent performance, and if the standard of fielding set
here continue, along with the quality of bowling and batting, then we can look
forward to an excellent year. All the new players fitted in well and made
contributions and team spirit was excellent. Next week sees the team embark on
our longest trip of the season to North Wheatley where I am sure we will sample
the delights of the Sun Inn.
