Again Chesh
lost the toss (I believe the last time he won toss in a league game Mick Case
was still a lad). Killamarsh elected to bat, no doubt with memories of last
year’s drubbing. Ben and Say opened and as usual found a good line early. Both
bowlers were unlucky when they each had a catch put down. Dnash replaced Ben
bowling into the wind and claimed the first wicket straightaway. Say beat the
bat but just could not get a further breakthrough and was replaced by Ben. At
the other end Dnash was replaced by Dancing Dave. He also claimed a wicket to
remove Malpass who had just completed his fifty. Dave claimed two more wickets
before Say came back to claim the fifth. At this point Kilamarsh stood at 120-5
and hopes were high that they could be restricted to a modest total. But a
useful sixth wicket stand of fifty (it was to be a day of good sixth wicket
partnerships) took the visitors through to a useful total, Ben claiming the
sixth wicket near the end.
In reply
Chesh was out early and Dnash and Paul struggled against a very accurate attack
of D Allan and D Barton, in fact only ten runs came from first ten overs. Paul
then got bowled by Barton and Nige fell to Allan. Simon and Dan briefly staged
a recovery and took the score to thirty before Simon was caught looking for
another boundary. A few runs later Wilko fell to leave us in a total mess at
38-5. This brought Say to the crease and with Dan tried to repair the damage.
At halfway we only had fifty on the board but Say then started to attack the
bowling with great effect, two huge sixes and numerous fours started to get us
thinking of an unlikely victory. At the other end Dnash was anchoring the
innings; he too found a few boundaries and along with excellent running put us
in with a shout.
Say went
to his maiden fifty for the club with another boundary but just when he looked
like taking the game away from Killamarsh he got out. This brought Grizzly Ben
to the wicket and again he played an excellent inning in a crisis. Ben and Dan
took the game to Killamarsh with aggressive running and sensible strokeplay,
one six over cover from Ben deserves note.
We
entered the final over requiring twelve for victory. Ben hit the first ball for
four but then holed out to the next. Fortunately Dnash had the strike and took
two of the next ball, then what looked like a four was stopped brilliantly on
the line and three was run. This left new batsman Dancing Dave needing three to
win from two ball, the field was brought in and Dave managed to hit the next
ball for four. This signalled scenes of jubilation with everyone, including
Dan, mobbing Dave all this and he had only faced one ball !!!!
This
really was victory pulled from the jaws of defeat and must give us great heart
going into the last two league matches and cup final. After failing to win a
number of close games we have finally won one.
Although
it is understandable that Killamarsh were disappointed at their defeat, they
showed what a poor bunch of sports they are by disappearing straight after the
game and not staying for a drink for the second year running. Maybe they won’t
get a chance to make it three in a row as they look destined for div 2.
