What a difference a week makes, after comfortably beating Kiveton in the previous week’s cup tie, we fell thirty five runs short.

Acting captain Dnash continued the club’s tradition of losing the toss on what was surely the hottest day most of us have ever played on. Ben and Say opened the attack and as usual found a good line straight away. It is becoming increasingly frustrating the number of times these two beat the bat without taking wickets. When finally an edge was found Nige dived in front of Dnash and put him off taking what should have been a simple catch. The same player was then dropped a further four times before Dancing Dave came on and finally put him out of his misery. At the other end Billy the Cat had come on and was bowling very well without luck before Ben came back and took the second wicket. Billy was brought back into the attack and took the third wicket. Burgess then ran down the pitch and Nige missed the stumping to begin a period where nothing went right for Thoresby in the searing heat. Burgess went through to a brilliant century shortly after he all but collapsed with heat exhaustion. Though it has to be said he was helped by the umpires allowing him to take drinks breaks at will.(whilst no one should have to suffer in the heat it did seem a little unfair on the bowlers/fielders to keep stopping the game just for one person to have a drink). The fielding and bowling became very ragged and Kiveton’s final total was a few more than it should have been.

In reply Skipper Dnash fell in the second over to a smart catch at point. Nige and Paul then put on thirty five before Nige was caught after looking

in good touch. Simon’s poor run continued and suddenly we had lost two wickets without scoring. Paul and Ben seemed to be repairing the damage before Paul was given out to a questionable catch down the leg side. Wilko hit a few boundaries and was looking good till he edged one to the keeper. Say joined Ben and the two put on a stand of fifty which put us in a good position before Say fell at the point were we had just about got on top. As normally happens this brought a second wicket with Dancing Dave failing to trouble the scorer. Ben had not given up hope of winning and played some great shots whilst Scott survived at the other end until Scott misjudged a ball and was bowled. Billy survived a couple of overs before getting the second poorish decision given out LBW. Ben remained unbeaten in what was a superb innings.

This was a strange game as we started off so will with a real buzz, inspired by stand in Capt Dnash but ultimatly dropped catches and missed stumpings cost us dear. The heat did make it difficult when we could not take wickets but we have to keep our discipline. Praise must go to Dnash who gave the captaincy his all and will hopefully lead us to victory this week.
