Retford                         178 AO           (20 POINTS)

Thoresby Colliery         107 AO           (4 POINTS)

After a very disappointing fielding and bowling performance on Saturday, Thoresby again won the toss and elected to field.

Winslade and Patel opened and bowled with pace and control against probably the best two openers in the league in Musgrove and Broadley. Patel in fact should have had Broadley out in his second over but Nash was unable to hold on to the chance at slip. At the other end Winslade was going past the edge with great regularity and the batsmen’s only object was survival. Patel eventually got Broadley caught behind.

This brought to the wicket the rather obnoxious Notts player Randall. As on previous occasions he returned quickly to the pavilion, this time bowled by Winslade for a duck. Hall was then caught behind, again off Winslade. Jordan came in and played a few shots before becoming the excellent Winslade’s third victim. Evans was then introduced into the attack and struck twice immediately. Veteran Mosely came to the wicket and launched Evans for a huge six first ball. Nash then replaced Winslade and had Mosely well caught by Hughes. This was maybe the point where the game was lost, as number nine Singleton, and Musgrove, put on fifty; Musgrove being dropped and missed on a run out in this period. Evans then got his third wicket to break the stand. A needless run out and a second wicket for Patel finished the innings in the final over.

This was a much-improved bowling performance but again five dropped catches and too many extras gave Retford a useful total when they should not have got a hundred.

In reply Thoresby started slowly against some reasonable bowling. Birkett fell in the eleventh over trying to up the run rate. Nash and Hughes then took the score to sixty and looked to be putting Thoresby in control until a shocking umpiring decision, to give Hughes out lbw, put the brakes on. It also has to be said that the behaviour of Randall after he had conned the umpire into the decision was nothing short of appalling. Cheshire and Nash briefly looked like they would repair the damage, until Cheshire fell to the final ball before drinks. Nash’s long vigil ended when he tried to up the run rate. This led to four more quick wickets before Evans and Lippeatt tried to bat the overs out; Lippeatt falling with just four overs remaining. During this stand Randall again could not manage to keep his mouth shut and there were a number of very personal remarks made to Evans. It is very sad that someone who has represented their county can’t display a better level of behaviour.
