Saturday 12th July

Thoresby Colliery II      209 – 4            [16 pts]

Eckington II                  148 – 5            [5 pts]

A sweltering afternoon and a belter of a pitch proved a real contrast to the previous week against the mighty Clumber.

Casey and Godders took the field, Casey in his customary short-sleeved sweater despite the 30 degree heat. However, he was not to get to the point of removing it as he was out caught behind in the very first over. Jeppo came to the wicket and, after playing himself in for a ball, started to thraipse the ball around off a length. Having made 35 out of 47 he was caught and bowled by skipper West, this, in the 15th over. Halfpenny was able to play himself in against some gentle ‘spin’ bowling on this flat track. Godfrey, meanwhile, was steadily ticking over and everything was fine and dandy for Thoresby. Indeed, this pair put on 112 and Godders had reached his 50 (5x4) when he was caught out behind to the returning West. Halfpenny was bowled trying to nurdle one down to third man for 90 (12x4); Ben Marson and Woody saw us through past 200 in the final couple of overs.

Bowling was hard work on this pitch and, despite an early breakthrough from Jeppo, we could not make significant inroads. Woody (captaining for the holidaying Walker) swapped things around and used seven bowlers but only he could take more than one wicket as Eckington held on for a draw. Their young stumper Lee batted well at the end for 28 NO.
