Saturday 19th July

Thoresby Colliery II         164 – 6             [16 pts]

Whitwell II                     93 – 8               [4 pts]

Thoresby lost the toss and were invited to bat on this very slow and low track at the now very pleasant Whitwell ground. The new pavilion really does do their members credit.

With Woody and Godders away on tour in the Whitby area (playing cricket, you understand, I mean they haven’t gone together as a couple or anything like that, goodness me no) Case and Halfpenny were restored to opening duties. Things were moving on steadily in to the 20’s until Casey was unfortunately bowled around his legs. Jeppo looked somewhat nervous against his former club and was soon out caught behind to the experienced Ian Sadler. Stuart Evans and Halfpenny grafted away, playing out the occasional maiden then rattling off a flourish of boundaries. Evans was out for a solid 27 with a dozen overs to go. Ben Marson struggled to adapt to the slow pitch and was caught at mid off. Rossington and Halfpenny then took a series of singles to the accurate Craig Sadler, Halfpenny eventually out for 88 with a couple of overs left. Rossy went to a dubious run out as Walker and Edgar took us to 164.

Stand in stumper Tony Wheeler (“He must be good ‘cos he’s a goalkeeper.” Quote N.Birkett) got the Whitwell reply off to a poor start when he ran out the young opener with a direct hit from 12 yards – “How do you throw with these b!”£$y gloves on?” he said! And just two runs later the other opener perished similarly taking on Ben Marson’s arm for a misjudged second run. After that it became increasingly obvious that Whitwell would struggle to approach their target. Once again the bowling was swapped around but, if you didn’t want to play shots and get yourself out, there was no assistance in the pitch at all for the bowlers. Even though occasional wickets fell it wasn’t until the surprise introduction of Walker himself, prolonging the game by several minutes with some desperate wides and throat high no-balls, that Whitwell lost their eighth wicket on the final delivery of the game.

Ah well, we’d have settled for 16 points at five minutes to two.

Then it was back to Edwinstowe for the knees up that was Nige’s birthday bash.
