Sunday 4th May

PCCC 221-6 (4 POINTS)

THORESBY COLLIERY 196-9 (0 POINTS)

On a glorious afternoon the game was played in an excellent spirit by two evenly matched teams. On losing the toss Thoresby were forced to field first and Marson broke through in the eighth over having the opener very well caught by Willis at third man. Cheshire was then brought into the attack with his occasional off- breaks and soon collected the second wicket. This brought Mahmood to the crease and the beginning of what was to be a fine innings. He played shots to all parts of the ground and remained unbeaten for an excellent century. Young Lee Willis came back and bowled really well at the end of the innings to claim three wickets.

Thoresby set off poorly after there challenging target losing Winslade early, but a superb century stand between Hughes and Nash put Thoresby in with a chance. They then both fell in quick succession leaving the middle order a difficult task to pull off the win. Despite a useful 20 not out from Wheeler, Thoresby fell 25 runs short of their target.

Sunday 11th May

THORESBY                    267-3  (0 POINTS)

CAYTHORPE LINCS    268-5  (4 POINTS)

This was another runfest, with Caythorpe taking the unusual step of winning the toss and electing to field. The Caythorpe opening pair bowled very well on the very fast and bouncy pitch. The first wicket fell at thirty with Winslade caught and bowled for nine. This brought Hughes to the wicket, who played shots all round the wicket and dominated a partnership of one hundred and ninety two with Birkett. Hughes brought up his century and was then bowled by Miles who was the pick of the Caythorpe attack. Birkett then brought up his century and played some lusty blows before being out to the penultimate ball of the innings.

In reply Caythorpe attacked the bowling and were mostly up with the rate due to an opening stand of one hundred and eighty four. Nash returned to the attack and got two wickets in two balls to give Thoresby some hope. When he then got another wicket in his next over to get rid of Roberts, who had top scored with ninety, things looked good for Thoresby. The arrival of Caythorp’s captain following a smart run out was to be final twist of an excellent game. He played some very good shots to finish thirty-two not out and secure victory for Caythorpe.

As the previous Sunday, this was an excellent high scoring game of cricket that we narrowly lost. Special mention must go to Nicole who made her debut and fielded excellently.

Sunday 18th May

Newark                    205-5  (4 points)
Thoresby Colliery 185-6    (0 points)

Yet again rain threatened the game being played. As we were about to set off the heavens opened but a phone call to our opponents confirmed that Newark was rain free. We arrived and found that, although uncovered, the pitch was not too bad.

Edgar, making his debut, opened the bowling and was very unlucky as several times he beat the bat. At the other end Dancing Dave Evans was trying to bowl his way out of poor form, caused largely by being very short of cricket due to the appalling weather. Evans was unlucky when Flinton put down a catch on the square leg boundary. Colliery’s misery was compounded when Evans then dropped the other opener off the bowling of Nash. These two then went on to post 143 for the first wicket before Birkett took the first wicket with his even slower ball. The other opener was then run out and Thoresby did well to restrict the opposition to 205.

In reply Winslade was run  out very unsportingly by the keeper when patting the pitch. In fact the game became very niggly from this point. The second wicket fell at 35 when Hughes was run out. Flinton followed 4 runs later. Nash and Birkett then put on 101 before Nash was bowled trying to up the run rate that was going up with each over. Two more wickets were lost before the overs ran out with Thoresby on 185-6, Birkett remaining unbeaten on 71.

There were some reasonable performances in this game and the biggest plus was seeing Winslade running in and bowling again following his injury.
The game was only spoiled by Newark’s loutish behaviour and ridiculous sledging. Being only a very average team, Newark would do better to try and concentrate on getting into a decent standard of Saturday cricket than their unnecessary antics, when teams are just after a relaxed game on a Sunday.
