Tomlins Trophy Round 2

THORESBY 168-8

WI CAVALIERS II  167-7

This was probably not our best fielding or bowling performance although a couple of excellent catches were taken. Again we fielded first and Cavaliers got off to a good start, Dnash only taking the first wicket in the twelfth over. Lippeatt was then introduced into the attack and bowled the best spell of the game to take three wickets for only nineteen. Dancing Dave making it a spinner’s day with two wickets.

Cavaliers then got the prize scalp of Chesh in the third over with a superb catch. Hughes again hit boundaries before being bowled trying to hit another. Dnash found a fielder with a cut shot and was well caught. Chatterton and Birkett then put together a stand of forty before Chat hit a good pull shot straight at square leg and was caught. Little Ben played a couple of nice shots, then misjudged the line and was lbw to a full ball. Grizzly Ben hung around a while before being caught off a wide ball. Patel came to the wicket and played the vital innings scoring twenty one off a handful of balls to take the pressure off Birkett who was just grinding out the runs at the other end. Patel was a little unlucky to be given out caught behind. Stu came to the wicket and showed all his years of experience just working the ball into gaps as the target got nearer. Just as it looked like these two would take us to victory Stu managed to kick the ball onto his stumps. Dancing Dave replaced his brother and with only Billy No Runs to come the pressure was on, but Dave and Birkett saw us home.

We will have to play better to win in the next round against Kiveton who defeated Papplewick II today. This game to be played on Sun 3rd August.

Sunday 3rd August - Tomlin Trophy – Quarter Final

THORESBY COLLIERY 261 for 5 (Daniel Nash 73, Martin Cheshire 33, Paul Hughes 74, Shailesh Patel 47, Kyle McKeeman 3 for 43)

beat

KIVETON PARK 219 all out (Adam Burgess 67, Matthew Williams 66, Daniel Nash 3 for 42, Martin Cheshire 4 for 25) by 42 runs

This game was played on probably the best pitch we have seen all year and won with an amazing innings.

Chesh again won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first on another scorching day. We were off to a flyer with both Chesh and Dan really getting on top of the bowling before Chesh danced down and was stumped off the change bowling. This brought to the wicket Paul (Jonesy) Hughes and what a difference a day makes as he looked in total control; in fact both he and Dnash took the Kiveton attack apart posting a stand of 150 in very quick time. There was a small wobble after Dnash was given out on a tight run out as Nige, Alan and Paul departed in quick succession. Then came the turning point as Shailesh just cut loose, hitting three huge sixes and a number of fours to really give the innings a great finish. Say finished with 47 NO off only 20 balls.

In reply Kiveton were pegged back by a superb opening spell from Big Billy and Little Ben who both contained very well. Bill struck with the vital wicket of Grainger, caught by his lodger after a juggle (Billy informing Paul later that he would have been homeless if he had dropped it). Dnash and the now off the wagon Evans (Dave, you owe Deb £20) came on as change bowlers and Dave got the vital wicket of Williams. At the other end Dnash was again struggling to find a good length and was replaced by Shailesh, who also was not at his best. At this point Kiveton were in with a good chance and Chesh took the gamble of bringing himself on to bowl, which, after his first three balls had gone for nine, looked dodgy. But Burgess, who had batted very well, danced down the pitch and was stumped by Nige. Wilko then produced an excellent throw to run out Kiveton’s captain and we were on top. The Chesh / Nige combination again worked to gain another stumping. Dnash was brought back and this time, although looking very silly bowling in a cap, (only Sir Geoffrey Boycott can do that with style) found a much better line and soon had a couple of wickets, one to an excellent boundary catch by Shailesh and one by Nige. Chesh struck again, with Grizzly pulling of a blinding catch, and also got the final wicket with a caught and bowled.

Another great team performance, and great credit must go to the large bunch of travelling supporters who came to cheer us on. Let’s hope you can all make it to the semi at Hosiery Mills.

THORESBY WON BY 42 RUNS

This report from the ‘Outlawed’ website:

In the other semi final a real ding dong battle took place between Kiveton Park and Thoresby Colliery before the latter claimed victory via the 42 run route. Batting first Thoresby powered to a massive 261 for 5 with Aussie Daniel Nash making 73, Martin Cheshire 33, Paul Hughes 74 and a hurricane knock of 47 from just 20 balls received from Shailesh Patel. Kyle McKeeman bowled extremely well considering this onslaught to register 3 for 43.

Not that this total looked to be enough as Kiveton raced away to a great start with the cultured left hander Adam Burgess making 67 and Australian Matt Williams 66 keeping up with the pace. Good bowling from man of the match Daniel Nash then turned the match as he took 3 for 42 and with Martin Cheshire bagging 4 for 25, Kiveton were bowled out for 219. This year’s competition has certainly thrown up some very exciting ties and this was one of the very best.

Semi-final - MANSFIELD HOSIERY MILLS v THORESBY - to be played by Sunday 24th August

Sunday 24th August – Tomlin Trophy Semi-Final

From the ‘Outlawed’ website

At Huthwaite Road: THORESBY COLLIERY 266 all out (Martin Cheshire 102, Paul Hughes 50, Jonathan Best 3 for 38, Nolan McKenzie 3 for 46, Darren Johnson 3 for 76)

beat

MANSFIELD HOSIERY MILLS 213 all out (Jonathan Best 43, Nolan McKenzie 40, David Evans 5 for 52) by 53 runs

By Paul Barker

After a two year reign the tenure that
Mansfield Hosiery Mills held on the Tomlin Trophy is finally over. In a high scoring thriller at Huthwaite Road, they finally succumbed to a Thoresby Colliery side that played at the peak of their powers to register a 53 run win.

Batting first Thoresby piled up an enormous 40 over total before being bowled out for 266 with Martin Cheshire refreshed from his holidays making a magnificent 102. The elegant left hander crashed the ball to all parts of the ground and with run machine Paul Hughes (50) also in good form Thoresby built up a massive total.

Jonathan Best (3 for 38), Nolan McKenzie (3 for 46) and Darren Johnson (3 for 76) all bowled well but their was no stopping the Thoresby express as runs piled up at just under seven an over for the entire innings.

Hosiery Mills though are not Trophy holders for nothing, and they set about their task in great style before being bowled out for a creditable 213. Jonathan Best (43) and Nolan McKenzie (40) both added batting honours to their bowling exploits, but it was never going to be quite enough and Thoresby deservedly cruised through to the final.

David Evans bowled quite brilliantly to take 5 for 52 and Thoresby will now meet the winners of next week’s tie between Cutthorpe and Farnsfield at Central Avenue, Worksop on Sunday 14th September.

…….And now. Nige’s report:

After the dreadful performance of the day befor,e this was without doubt our best one of the season. The highlight of the game being one of the best innings I have ever seen.

Chesh finally won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first on a pitch that had produced a low scoring game the day before. Dnash fell early but this brought Paul to the crease. Chesh and Paul then totally dominated the bowling, scoring freely, with Chesh being the more aggressive. In fact one six almost went into Sutton!!. Chesh went to his fifty with a stylish boundary, Paul also brought up his but was out shortly after well caught by the keeper. They had shared in a stand of 165 for the second wicket. Nige and Chesh then put on a quick thirty during which Chesh went through to a marvellous ton. Nige was out trying to work the ball to third man and Chesh’s long innings came to an end caught on the boundary. Shailesh and Stevie then played with freedom before both were out in quick succession. Ben fell to an excellent catch by Mills skipper Langford and Dancing Dave was bowled first ball. Hutchy hit one of the best shots of the innings only to be caught on the boundary when it looked like a six. Billy and Young Ben added a few more before Billy was bowled with 3 balls remaining.

Ben and Steve opened up, Ben bowling with great pace and accuracy. With Steve finding the slope very difficult he was replaced by Patel who also struggled a bit with the slope. At the other end Ben struck the first blow having Smail well caught by Young Ben at square leg. Dnash then replaced Ben and with the run rate climbing Jayasinga needlessly caused the run out of Loveridge, Billy the Cat doing the fielding. Dnash then got the vital wicket of Jayasinga caught behind by Nige. Billy had bowled a tidy spell from the sloped end before Mckensie launched the ball onto the roof of the pavilion removing a couple of tiles. With the run rate now approaching 10 an over Mckensie greeted new bowler Dancing Dave with two large sixes off the first two balls of his spell ( Dave’s return to the side after his sabbatical not looking good at this time), Dave was unlucky when the next ball fell just short of Paul from another mistimed big shot . But Dave’s luck did change a couple of overs later when he got Mckensie out caught by Nige off a top edge. Steve replaced Dnash and removed Appleton, caught by Nige. Skipper Langford joined Best and for a while they all but kept up the run rate before Langford was stumped of Dancing Dave. Ben returned to complete his spell which was by far the most economical of either side on the day. Dave then had Best stumped and in the following over he clean bowled the next two to put himself on a hat trick and complete a five wicket haul. The last man saved the Hat trick but was bowled by Patel in the next over to complete a memorable victory and secure Thoresbys first ever appearance in the final which will be played on Sept 14th at WORKSOP CC.

This was a tremendous team performance but huge thanks must also go to the large number of people who came to support us, it really does make a difference and i hope you will all join us on the coach that is being laid on for the final.

I think we should also give very high praise to the supporters and players of Mansfield Hosiery Mills who conducted themselves in a very sporting way and even though they must have been disappointed were very gracious in defeat. If all games were played in this spirit cricket would surely be the winner.
